The academic year

The academic year in New Zealand starts in mid-February and finishes in late November every year; however, most of our programs can take mid-semester enrolments so that your study plans work for you. NorthTec has standardised course fees no matter what subject you choose to study. This is because the fees are based on the level and length of the programme rather than subject area. We also offer international students a 6-month English Language Scholarships if you need to raise your IELTs score to enter your programme of choice.

Our courses

NorthTec offers over 90 different programmes including Bachelor Degrees, Certificates, Diplomas and Postgraduate awards. Some of which are located at satellite learning centres dotted around stunning Northland locations, Rawene, Bay of Islands and Kerikeri. Many of the international student activities happen around Northland so you will get to visit these learning centres. Your pastoral care coordinator organises fortnightly activities such as, rock climbing, horse riding, or snorkelling so that you have fun while you study.

Our programmes are unique because they are structured and delivered so that you get lots of one-on-one contact with your tutor. NorthTec is all about ensuring that your study is personalised. We do this by creating numerous opportunities for your questions to be answered and by having a diverse learning atmosphere. Our teaching ethos acknowledges that each learner’s needs are varied; therefore, classes are delivered with relevant visual, kinaesthetic, audible and written material.

The Bachelor of Nursing has a module for practical-led learning at two leading hospitals in the area, Northland Base Hospital and Kaitaia Hospital. Malin Haugsgjerd, a recent international student, spoke to us about her experience, “I really like the small discussion groups. I’m also keen to get into the clinical experience here. We are going to do mental health and primary heath at Kaitaia hospital.” NorthTec and Malin’s university have an exchange agreement, so after 5-months practical experience Malin returned to Norway to complete her degree.

NorthTec’s Bachelor of Social Service makes a commitment to creating a supportive environment. All students are known and valued as individuals. The tutors are dedicated to seeing their students graduate and start work in the community, often in Northland. This faculty has strong links with local community-based organisations, ensuring that students get plenty of genuine industry experience and maintain a current perspective of social service practice.
