Simba’s story

“I decided to enrol with TAFE Western Australia to further my training as a Horticulturist as I heard the Horticulture lecturer here had the best experience in native Australian plants, bush foods and medicine.

Life in Broome is like a dream, every day here is paradise. There are beautiful beaches, red cliffs that you can paint your whole body with, beautiful bush land and really strong cultural history. It’s really good getting in touch with some of the local people, learning from them and exchanging ideas.”

Simba was a trained Horticulturalist but wanted to expand his skills and have the adventure of a lifetime, so he enrolled in the Diploma of Horticulture at TAFE Western Australia’s Broome campus in Australia’s spectacular Kimberley region.

The Kimberley is one of the world’s most ancient environmental and cultural landscapes and the pearling and beach resort of Broome is the main town in this spectacular area.

This is proper outback Australia and the town is famous for its adventure tourism. In Broome, people spend their weekends scuba diving, riding camels on the beach, sailing around tropical islands, windsurfing, heli-trekking over rugged mountains and waterfalls, or just watching Netflix ;)

Studying at TAFE Western Australia gave Simba access to some of the top experts in horticulture who taught him the latest industry skills and knowledge all with the spectacular natural surrounds of Western Australia as his ‘classroom’.

As a popular tourism destination, it’s also a great place for international students to pick up work in the many resorts and bars and in Western Australia students get paid higher average wages while also benefiting from a low cost of living. A recent survey for example, found that Perth, the capital city of WA, is now more affordable than Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide (The Economist, 2016). This means your money goes further in Western Australia and can help cover your living and entertainment costs.

After a year of study and experiences soaking up the Western Australian sun, Simba has an international qualification that makes him stand out from the crowd and memories he will never forget.
