“I have been interested in the theory of business since I started working for myself, and I’ve always wanted to better my computer and general administration knowledge, as I feel that all my current skills are much more practical.

“Ideally I’d like to get a better understanding of things like taxes, payroll, spreadsheets and data systems from doing this course.

“I did look at a couple of other TAFEs but they were too far from where I wanted to be – I’m living in the gorgeous town of Margaret River, by the beach!

“I am really interested in sport. I’m already a qualified cricket coach and also have diplomas in sports therapy and sports and remedial massage. I’d love to have a career in sport and by doing this course I hope to gain employment in the industry.

Australia

Australian student visas usually allow full time students to work for up to 40 hours per fortnight during term time, and unlimited hours during summer holidays. The minimum wage in Australia is currently $15.96 before tax.

Bank Accounts

We highly recommend that you open a local bank account for the period of your studies.  It is free to set up an account from the UK and Study Options can help you do it.  Before you leave you can then transfer any money that you will need immediately for your fees, rental deposit and food.  Using your local bank card as soon as you arrive means you will not have to worry about exchange rates, commission or your UK bank charging you for any transactions, especially when dealing with large amounts such as those for your college fees.

College study appeals to students of all age ranges, so if you are not travelling on your own to Australia or New Zealand, there a few things you should know in order to bring your partner or family with you.

It's difficult to put an exact figure on how much money you'll needs to have as a student in Australia or New Zealand, as the answer depends so much on your individual requirements and expectations.  Everyone's budget will be different but when working out yours, remember to factor in the essentials - course tuition fees, accommodation, utilities, local travel, food and entertainment.  You can get an idea of what each of these might cost you by checking online forums, or asking friends and relatives who might have recently visited the country you will be studying in.

If you are a citizen of the UK or Ireland and decide that you would like to study in either Australia or New Zealand, you will counted as an international student.  This means you will be paying your tuition fees at international rates.

How much do courses cost?

Each college sets its own tuition fees, so the cost of a course will vary depending on what subject, qualification and college you choose, but you should generally expect to pay somewhere between AU$8,000 and AU$15,000 per year in Australia, and NZ$12,000 to NZ$20,000 per year in New Zealand for tuition fees.
