“My experience was exciting and I can see how much I have evolved as a person. I had an awesome time”

Nathanial wanted to become a Chef, but he also wanted to see the world, so he grabbed the best of both worlds and enrolled in the renowned Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery at TAFE Western Australia.

Western Australia is famous for its world class food and wine scene and studying at TAFE Western Australia gave Nathanial access to some of the top experts in the trade who taught him the latest industry skills and knowledge.

As the only Australian provider to hold City & Guilds accreditation, TAFE Western Australia hospitality graduates can benefit from both Australian and international qualifications.

This helps TAFE Western Australia graduates stand-out from the crowd as they hold a more well-rounded and international skill set than other students.

But this course also gave Nathanial a great excuse to spend a year in beautiful Perth, the seventh most liveable city in the world (EIU, 2016).

Perth is famous for its amazing weather and beaches, and Nathanial would go surfing before class at his local beach and play football at dusk during long sunny days. There are 19 white sand beaches in Perth, all within easy reach of TAFE campuses, and Perth has the most hours of sunshine of any Australian city. You can even snorkel off reefs and swim with dolphins, or for something a bit more hip, party at one of Perth’s famous beachside ‘Sunday Sessions’.

One upside that Nathan didn’t expect was that the cost of living in Perth is now more affordable than Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (The Economist, 2016). With higher average wages in Western Australia for part time work, and better part-time job prospects than university students, TAFE Western Australia students can use part-time work to cover their living and entertainment costs.

TAFE Western Australia even helps hospitality students find part-time and graduate work by hosting special employer nights on campus where students can meet with industry.

After a year of study and experiences soaking up the Western Australian sun, Nathanial is now a qualified Chef with international skills that make him stand out from the crowd and memories he will never forget.
